HEIC to JPG or PNG: Which Format Should You Choose?

JPG usually suits photos and broad compatibility; PNG suits lossless output. Neither conversion makes the original HEIC better.

Choose the output for its destination

HEIC and HEIF files are common for phone photos because they can store detailed images efficiently. The difficulty appears when a website, form, editor, or older device does not accept the format. Converting a copy to JPG or PNG solves the compatibility problem without requiring you to discard the original.

Use JPG for most photographs

JPG is usually the practical choice for ordinary photographs, online forms, email attachments, and systems that expect widely supported image files. It compresses photographic detail efficiently, and its quality setting lets you balance visual clarity against file size.

Start near the recommended quality setting, then inspect the result at its intended viewing size. Lower quality can be useful when a destination imposes a file-size limit, but skies, gradients, hair, fabric, and fine edges may show compression artifacts first. Raising quality can preserve more detail, although the resulting JPG may be larger than the HEIC source.

Use PNG when lossless output matters

PNG stores the converted pixels without adding JPEG compression. It can be useful when a downstream workflow specifically requires PNG or when sharp edges and small graphical details matter more than file size. For a normal camera photo, however, PNG is often substantially larger than JPG.

Converting a lossy HEIC photo to PNG does not recreate detail that the camera never stored. PNG preserves the pixels produced by the conversion, but it does not make the source image more original or more accurate. Keep the HEIC file as the master copy when preservation matters.

Keep the source photo. Conversion creates a useful compatibility copy. It should not be your only copy when the original HEIC image, its metadata, or its storage efficiency matters.

Understand what is preserved

The converted image preserves the source pixel dimensions and applies its orientation so the result displays correctly. Source metadata is not copied. That can remove information such as capture details or location data, but you should still inspect the output rather than assume conversion is a privacy-cleaning process for every possible file or workflow.

Compare the converted file with the original for orientation, color, brightness, and important detail. Different image viewers can display color information differently, so use the destination application for the most meaningful check whenever possible.

Continue with the format you need

After conversion, use the JPG or PNG like any other supported image. If several phone photos need to become one document, convert each HEIC source separately and then arrange the results with the Images to PDF tool. Put the images in the intended page order before creating the PDF.

If you are working in the opposite direction and need image copies of PDF pages, use PDF to JPG. That process rasterizes each PDF page; it is different from converting an existing photo file and may remove searchable or selectable document text.
